It can be done at any age and for multiple reasons.There are several benefits of it. It began as a religious custom but today it is done for many factors. What is the foreskin? The foreskin is a piece of skin that covers the round tip of the penis called glans penis. At the time of birth foreskin is completely attached to the glans. As baby growns, the foreskin gets separated from the glans and is able to be retracted, or pulled back to expose part of or entire glans. If the foreskin doesn’t get separated on time or its opening remains very tight, it is known as phimosis. Phimosis may require further intervention like or circumcision to correct it. Is circumcision a common procedure? Circumcision is the most common surgery performed in the world among males. In the United States, up to 60% of baby boys are circumcised and around the world, about 33%. Jewish and Muslim people perform circumcision as part of their religions. At what age is circumcision performed? Typically, circumcisions happen a day or two after birth, in the hospital but in Jewish faith, it (also called a bris) is performed on 8th day after birth. Other cultures perform circumcision at a later age. How long does circumcision take? The entire procedure takes approximately 10 to 20 minutes. Is circumcision painful? Circumcision can be done under local anaesthesia or under spinal anaesthesia or even under general anaesthesia. You can discuss with your doctor about advantages and disadvantages of these methods and choose the one most suited to you. Can an adult get circumcised? Yes of-course. Procedure remains mostly the same. What are the benefits of circumcision? Circumcision leads to better hygiene which in turn may decrease the probability of glans cancer. May improve experience of coitus. Chances of recurrent infection and inflammation of penis get minimised. Chances of cervical cancer to female partner may reduce. Chances of sexually transmitted diseases may turn down. Urinary tract disease may happen less frequently What are the risks of circumcision? In general circumcision carries little risk but still these may include: Infection Bleeding Reaction to anesthesia agent Pain Cutting the foreskin too long or too short How long does it take to recover from circumcision? Recovery from circumcision takes about one week to ten days. Does circumcision affect fertility or sexual pleasure? Circumcision doesn’t affect fertility (ability to produce a biological child). Let’s understand the anatomy of the penis: -The glans is the head or tip of the penis. The opening of the urethra is located here, which is where urine, pre-cum, and semen exit from. For many people, the glans is the most sensitive part of the penis. -In an uncircumcised penis, the foreskin drapes over the head of the penis like a hood when not erect. When erect, the foreskin retracts and exposes the glans. In a circumcised penis, the foreskin is absent. This leaves the glans visible at all times, whether erect or not. It is estimated that approximately 30-40% of penis owners globally are circumcised, mainly for religious or cultural reasons. -The shaft of the penis extends from the glans to where it connects to the lower belly or pubic region. The shaft houses the urethra, and is made up of layers of spongy tissue, which can fill up with blood when stimulated –this is what causes a penis to grow in size and firmness when erect. It is very common for the penis to curve slightly when erect. This is generally harmless and not a cause for concern. -A small ridge of skin called the frenulum connects the foreskin to the penis, and the raphe is the faint line or seam along the underside of the shaft of the penis that extends across the scrotum and perineum as well. -Below the penis, surrounded by pubic hair, are the testicles or balls. They are located together in a single sac called the scrotum, or ball sac which is like temperature regulated housing for the testes. The testes have two main functions: to produce sperm, and to produce hormones, particularly testosterone. The head, the shaft, and even the testes can all be sources of pleasure when stimulated during sexual activity — different folks may enjoy different things— so talk about what you and your partner enjoy!✨
